About the Author
Stuart Woods was born on January 9, 1938, in Manchester, Georgia. He got his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Georgia in 1959. Not long after that, he joined the US Air Force and started working in advertising. He was stationed in New York at the time.
In less than ten years, Woods moved to London and lived there for three years. In 1973, he moved to Ireland and started writing his first book, Chiefs, which came out in 1981. Woods also learned to sail while he was in Ireland. He competed in races like the Mirror National Championships, the Observer Single-handed Trans-Atlantic Race in 1976, and the Multihull Offshore Cruising and Racing Association Azores Race in 1975.
Woods owns a Cessna Citations Mustang and is a licensed, instrument-rated private pilot. He also likes to sail. Wood’s second book was actually a guidebook to more than 150 places to stay in England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.
It came out in 1979 and was called A Romantics Guide to the Country Inns of Britain and Ireland. None of the Barrington books won awards, but the miniseries version of Chiefs was nominated for three Emmy Awards and one Eddie Award.
