Use This Exclusive CNET Discount to Get $100 Off One of Our Favorite Earbuds

If you want something a bit on the higher end when it comes to earbuds, these Status Between 3ANC are an impressive option worth considering. In fact, they’ve shown up several times on our lists, such as our favorite best-sounding wireless earbuds and best noise-canceling earbuds. You can even score significant savings if you use CNET’s exclusive promo code. Just enter CNETDISCOUNT at checkout to bring them down by $100 from their launch price, meaning you’ll pay just $149.

One thing that sets the Status Between 3ANC apart from other earbuds is that they have three drivers, giving you a much wider range of audio than you might expect. Granted, they may not compete with higher-end headphones and only support the AAC audio codec, but they’re really good for the price. Also, they have multipoint Bluetooth, so you can connect to two devices at the same time.

They also have active noise canceling, and they do a pretty good job of cutting out ambient sounds, which is great if you want to go exercise or use them in the office. The Between 3ANC also offers PX5 water resistance, so they can withstand some of the elements when using them outside. And their fit is surprisingly comfortable, according to CNET’s audio expert David Carnoy, even though they may look a little bit wonky and bulky.

Overall, they’re an interesting pair of headphones, and with the discount code CNETDISCOUNT knocking an extra $30 off the current discounted rate, you can get them for a very good price. Even so, if you’d still like to see a few different options, check out these earbud deals as well.

Best laptop deals and PC sales

Acer

The Acer Aspire 3 is a solid mid-range option with budget pricing. It has a mid-range AMD Ryzen 5 7520U, which is a processor that can easily handle most productivity and day-to-day tasks. There’s also 512GB of storage and 8GB, although the latter is slightly on the lower end, which isn’t a deal breaker but something to keep in mind.

HP

The HP 15 laptop has an entry-level Intel Core i3-1215U, which will work fine for the majority of productivity costs. It also has a large, 15.6-inch screen running an FHD resolution and, more importantly, 8GB of RAM, which is about the minimum we’d like to see. The same goes for the 256GB storage.

Dell

This configuration of the Dell Inspiron 14 is probably one of the cheapest two-in-one laptops that you’re going to find. It has a 14-inch screen with a 1,920×1,200-pixel resolution and a peak 250-nit brightness, which isn’t too bad. The AMD Ryzen 5 7530U is also an excellent mid-range processor, and while the 8GB of RAM isn’t a ton, the 512GB of storage is pretty good.

Lenovo

The Lenovo Yoga 7i is a perfect option if you want a convertible laptop with a 16-inch screen. It has a solid 1,920×1,200 resolution, a midrange Intel 13th Core i5 1335U processor and 16GB of RAM, which should give you an overall smooth experience.

Acer

While the Acer Nitro 5 bills itself as a gaming laptop, it’s actually a pretty great all-arounder. It comes with a better entry-level RTX3050 Ti which runs a 1,920×1,080-pixel resolution screen that can hit a 144Hz refresh rate. The mid-range Intel 12th Gen Core i5 processor is also pretty great, while the 16GB RAM should be more than enough to give you a smooth experience.

Lenovo

Two-in-one touchscreens are very versatile, especially if you prefer something with a writing experience. It has a mid-range Intel Core i5-1335U, which isn’t as powerful as some other options on this list, but it’s enough for most productivity and some editing tasks. RAM is luckily pretty good at 16GB, while the 512GB of storage should be more than enough for most folks.

Apple/CNET

Battery Life/Runtime 1,026 minutesWeight 2.8 poundsDisplay size/type 13-inch, 2560 x 1600 IPS LCDProcessor tested Apple M1 8‑coreGraphics tested Apple M1 7-core

While the M2 MacBook Air 13 is a bit older but it’s still an excellent option if you want a MacBook without spending a ton of money. It also comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB, which is pretty good for an Apple MacBook, especially at this price. You also get up to four months of various Apple services, which sweetens the deal even more

Read our Apple MacBook Air M1 (Late 2020) review.

Dell

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly gaming laptop, the Dell G15 is a pretty excellent option that’s regularly suggested. It comes with an RTX 4050 and an AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS processor, so it’s a good entry-to-mid-range laptop. You also get a very reasonable 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Microsoft/CNET

This laptop is a solid choice for everyday users. It has 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, but where it shines is the 13.5-inch screen with 2256×1504-pixel full high-definition resolution. It’s a good size for portability and is great for staying productive or streaming content on the go.

Asus/CNET

If you’re looking for a gaming laptop for less than $1,000, this one’s worth considering. It has a 14-inch screen, which isn’t large but can make it easier to bring the laptop with you when you travel. Plus, it sports 16GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD storage, an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS processor and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card, which will work well for gamers and creators alike.

Apple/CNET

Apple’s new MacBook Air 15 is a great option if you’re looking for a thin and light laptop in the Apple ecosystem that still has a relatively large screen. It comes with an M2 chip, one generation old but still very powerful, as well as 8GB and 256GB of storage, both of which are on par with what we’d expect to see from Apple at this price. There is also up to $825 in trade-in value you can take advantage of.

Lenovo

This configuration of the Legion Slim 5 is a solid mid-tier gaming laptop, especially since it comes with an RTX 4060 and an AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS Processor. It also has a pretty excellent screen, being able to hit 165Hz refresh rate and has a 2,560×1,600 resolution, both of which together might tax the GPU a bit, but at least it does give you the variability to prioritize what you need.

What should you look for in a laptop deal?

One of the biggest things to consider is which laptop configuration is on sale. Often, with the best laptop deals, only a specific version of the laptop is on sale, and making any changes could affect the price. This means that sometimes you find the 512GB model is actually cheaper than the 256GB option or a similar situation.

When are the best laptop deals available?

Generally, you’ll find the best laptop deals during back-to-school shopping time in late summer or early fall and a bit later in the year during annual Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales events. There are laptop deals throughout the year, but if you’re looking for the best deal and can afford to wait, these are the best times to buy one.

Which retailers usually offer the best laptop deals?

You can usually find deals across a variety of retailers when it comes to laptops. Best Buy, Amazon, Newegg and other retailers tend to offer sales on more specific models, while manufacturers including HP, Lenovo and Dell usually host larger sales that cover more models and configurations. If you’re looking for a specific model, you’ll want to keep checking back weekly for the latest set of deals.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: SpongeBob, MLB 24 and More Are Arriving Soon

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, a CNET Editors’ Choice award pick, offers hundreds of games that you can play on your Xbox Series X or Series S, Xbox One and PC for $17 a month. With a subscription, you get new games every month — like the Resident Evil 3 remake — and other benefits, like online multiplayer and deals on non-Game Pass titles.

In February, Microsoft added a game based on the lovable cartoon dog Bluey and the dark humor zombie title Dead Island 2 to Game Pass Ultimate. Here are the titles Xbox will add to the game service soon.

PAW Patrol World

Available: March 7

Get ready to use your paws to save the day in this action-adventure game based on the ubiquitous children’s cartoon. You can play as your favorite pup, drive vehicles from the show and take on rescue missions to help animals in need. You can play on your own in single-player mode or compete with your family in co-op mode for a fun spin on playtime.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated

Available: March 12

If the Krusty Krab pizza is the pizza for you and me, then it stands to reason that this game is the game for you and me, too. Play as SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy as you try and stop Plankton from taking over Bikini Bottom. And if you bought the SpongeBob SquarePants-themed Xbox Series X, what better game to play first on your new console?

Control: Ultimate Edition

Available: March 13

If you haven’t experienced this award-winning title from the creators of the Alan Wake series, now’s your chance. This supernatural action game takes place in an expansive government office building that has been corrupted by an unknown entity. You have to find out what happened in this unpredictable world all while avoiding the absurd obstacles in your way — sometimes that means flying over them.

No More Heroes 3

Available: March 14

Grasshopper Manufacture

World-renowned assassin Travis Touchdown is back in the saddle in this hack-and-slash adventure game. Take control of Travis and his trusty beam katana — don’t say lightsaber — as he defends his hometown from an alien invasion. And the only way to do that is to climb the ranks of the deadliest fighters in the galaxy. It’s like an anime made into a video game.

Lightyear Frontier

Available: March 19

If you’ve ever thought, “Yeah, farm life games like Stardew Valley are fun, but they need more Gundams,” then this one is for you. In this game, you’re a farmer building an interstellar homestead full of alien crops and fauna, all with the help of your trusty mech suit.

“Use combat-focused tools in a violence-free way, such as a chainsaw and machine gun loaded with seeds, as instead of fighting the wildlife, you’ll use your arsenal to gather resources, shoot seeds into the ground, water crops, and clean up the environment, making it habitable for you and your friends,” Anita Stenholm, marketing and events manager of Frame Break, told Xbox.com

MLB The Show 24

Available: March 19

A baseball player running A baseball player running

MLB

Xbox added Madden NFL 24 to Game Pass Ultimate in February, and now Xbox is adding MLB The Show 24 to the service on Day 1. You can play as your favorite baseball team, get them to the World Series and make them a dynasty. This installment in the baseball series also includes new pitcher animations to keep runners on their toes, enhanced pitching mechanics and more.

And if you can’t wait for March 19, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can purchase the digital deluxe add-on bundle version of the game for $40 and get the title four days early on March 15.

Titles leaving Game Pass

While you can play the above titles on Game Pass Ultimate, three games are leaving the service on March 15. So finish up any side quests or you’ll have to purchase these titles separately.

For more on Xbox, here’s what Diablo 4 coming to Game Pass likely means for the service, other titles available on Game Pass Ultimate now and everything to know about the gaming service.

If you aren’t familiar with the Beats name, it’s a brand that makes some of the best wireless headphones and wireless earbuds on the market, and it’s known for being a bit more funky and trendy. Of course, more importantly, the brand was acquired by Apple, meaning that Beats products have the same level of smooth integration with Apple gear as AirPods do. Beats also tend to be cheaper, but even so, you’ll still want to take advantage of this multi-retailer sale that knocks up to 43% off their price.

Amazon is currently offering an array of Beats headphones and earbuds with discounts of up to 43% off. Be sure to check the prices though — not every color and design is included. Amazon isn’t the only outlet offering these discounts, either. Best Buy is now offering Beats products with savings of up to $150 off, while Apple is also getting in on the act. Support for lossless audio via the USB-C connection and battery life of up to 40 hours are two examples, while personalized spatial audio and strong ANC performance certainly don’t hurt, either.

iOS 17.4: Your iPhone Just Got These New Emoji and Other Features

iOS 17.4: Your iPhone Just Got These New Emoji and Other Features

Apple released iOS 17.4 to the general public on Tuesday, more than a month after iOS 17.3 was released to the general public. The latest iOS update brings new features, including major changes for people in the European Union and new emoji, as well as bug fixes to your iPhone.

CNET Tech Tips logo CNET Tech Tips logo

To download the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update, tap Install Now and follow the onscreen prompts.

Here’s what iOS 17.3 brings to your iPhone.

Downloading other app stores in the EU

Apple introduced a significant change to Safari, the App Store and iOS with iOS 17.4, but only for people in Europe. With iOS 17.4, people in the EU can download an alternative app store and apps from outside the App Store. As CNET’s Katie Collins reports, this marks one of the largest changes to the App Store since its inception in 2008. People in the EU will also be given new default app controls, giving them more ways to customize their iPhone experience.

People in the EU have access to other app stores and more now.

Apple made these changes, which were announced in January, to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act.

More options for in-app payments

Apple introduced more ways to make in-app payments with iOS 17.4. If you go to Settings > Privacy & Security, you’ll see an option called Contactless & NFC, or near-field communication. If you tap the new option, you’ll be taken to a mostly blank page that has a small disclaimer that says the page will show apps that have requested the ability to use contactless and NFC payments in the future. Apple announced these options alongside the changes for people in the EU, and there’s no word on whether this will be utilized by apps outside that region.

At least 100 new emoji

Some of the new emoji in iOS 17.4 include a phoenix, a slice of lime and broken chains.

Emojipedia

Apple introduced over 100 new emoji to iPhone users with iOS 17.4. Those emoji include heads shaking up and down or left and right, a phoenix and a slice of lime. These emoji were announced in 2023, and some Android devices, including the latest Samsung phones, already have them.

Improved iMessage security against future threats

With iOS 17.4, your iMessage chats get a security boost to protect them from cyberattacks that involve quantum computing. According to CNET’s David Lumb, Apple said it hasn’t seen these kinds of cyberattacks yet, but the company wants to get ahead of the potential threat now.

Podcasts can now show transcripts

apple-podcast-icon apple-podcast-icon

You can now read a transcript of your favorite podcasts with iOS 17.4.

Apple

In iOS 17.4, you can read the transcripts of your favorite podcasts as you listen to them. To see the transcripts, go into the Podcasts app and start listening to a show, then tap the show’s banner across the bottom of your screen. Look at the bottom of the show’s title card and you’ll see a new button in the bottom left corner that looks like a speech bubble with quotes inside it. Tap this button and you’ll see the transcript of the show you’re listening to.

You can search within the transcript, too, so if someone mentions a book or movie title and you only remember part of it, you can search the part you do know and find the whole title.

Virtual card numbers come to Apple Cash

Your Apple Cash gets an upgrade with iOS 17.4, too. Now you can have a virtual card that can access your Apple Cash. This card comes with its own number, expiration date and three-digit security code, like a physical card. You can also easily request a new card number if you think your card has been compromised.

This feature is helpful if you want to use your Apple Cash at an online store that doesn’t accept Apple Pay.

Another digital clock widget

In iOS 17.4, Apple introduced a new digital clock app widget called City Digital. This widget displays the time as well as a set location as opposed to wherever your iPhone is at the moment. This can be helpful if you’re traveling or live far from family and friends but want to keep in touch without waking them up in the middle of the night.

Apple introduced the digital clock widget to iPhones with the release of iOS 17.2.

More Stolen Device Protection options

smartphone with a keyhole lock smartphone with a keyhole lock

Stolen Device Protection now lets you always require a security delay, or only when you’re away from locations like your home.

Angela Lang/CNET

Apple introduced a few new options in Stolen Device Protection with iOS 17.4. The new options let you choose whether you want to always require a one-hour security delay to access certain settings or make changes, or to only require the delay when you’re away from a familiar location like your home.

Apple introduced Stolen Device Protection with iOS 17.3, and the intent of the feature is to protect some of your data if your device is stolen or falls into nefarious hands. The feature doesn’t protect all your data, but Apple still recommends everyone turn it on.

New Battery Health readout for iPhone 15 models

With iOS 17.4, iPhone 15 models get a new Battery Health readout. If you go to Settings > Battery, you’ll see a new option which tells you the status of your battery’s health in a word, like Normal or Service. You can also tap this option for more details about your battery, like its cycle count and maximum capacity. Before, your iPhone would show a percentage in relation to your battery’s health without any indication of what it means.

Read more: iOS 17.4’s New Tool Shows if Your iPhone 15’s Battery Health Is Normal

New Home button in the Music and Books apps

Apple introduced a Home button in Apple Music and the Books app with iOS 17.4. If you open either app and look at the bottom of your screen, the Home button is in the far-left corner. This button replaced Listen Now in Apple Music and Read Now in Books.

If you’re an Apple Music subscriber and tap the button, you’re taken to a page that shows you menus, like Recently Played, and recommendations based on artists you’ve listened to. If you tap this button in the Books app, you see menus like Current Bestsellers and Start Reading for Free.

Previous iOS updates brought Home buttons to the Podcasts and Apple TV apps, so this change is likely Apple trying to apply some uniformity across its apps.

Siri can send messages in more than one language

In iOS 17.4, Apple gave Siri the ability to send messages in multiple languages. If you go to Settings > Siri & Search, you’ll see the option Messaging with Siri, which replaced Automatically Send Messages. Tap Messaging with Siri and you’ll see Add Language. If you tap this, you can have Siri send messages in other languages, like Arabic, Spanish and Thai. Apple writes that Siri will also read messages using the languages in this list, but choosing one from this list won’t change the primary language Siri listens and responds in. Prior to this, Siri could only send messages in English.

New Apple CarPlay and Maps experience in certain vehicles

Apple CarPlay in-car display Apple CarPlay in-car display

Certain Apple CarPlay supported vehicles will show a new Maps instrument cluster with iOS 17.4.

StackSocial/CNET

With iOS 17.4, if you use Apple CarPlay with Maps in certain supported vehicles, you’ll see a new instrument cluster.

“With supported CarPlay vehicles, Apple Maps will present a new instrument cluster experience with information about upcoming maneuvers,” Apple wrote online. “Users will be able to swap the desired display type between the main and instrument cluster screen by tapping the map configuration button on the upper right of the Maps main screen.”

However, Apple didn’t say which vehicles support this new feature, and the company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Here are the full release notes for iOS 17.4.

Emoji

New mushroom, phoenix, lime, broken chain, and shaking heads emoji are now available in the emoji keyboard.

18 people and body emoji add the option to face them in either direction.

Apple Podcasts

Transcripts let you follow an episode with text that highlights in sync with the audio in English, Spanish, French and German.

Episode text can be read in full, searched for a word or phrase, tapped to play from a specific point and used with accessibility features such as Text Size, Increase Contrast and VoiceOver.

This update includes the following enhancements and bug fixes:

Music recognition lets you add songs you have identified to your Apple Music Playlists and Library, as well as Apple Music Classic.

Siri has a new option to announce messages you receive in any supported language.

Stolen Device Protection supports the option for increased security in all locations.

Battery Health in Settings shows battery cycle count, manufacture date, and first use on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models.

Call Identification displays Apple-verified business name, logo and department name when available.

Business updates in Messages for Business provide trusted information for order status, flight notifications, fraud alerts or other transactions you opt into.

Apple Cash virtual card numbers enable you to pay with Apple Cash at merchants that don’t yet accept Apple Pay by typing in your number from Wallet or using Safari AutoFill.

Fixes an issue where contact pictures are blank in Find My.

How to use Proton VPN (A Step-by-Step Guide)

How to use Proton VPN (A Step-by-Step Guide)

Proton VPN is an open-source VPN that’s specifically designed for users who have privacy and security as their top priorities.

In this article, we walk you through how to set up and use Proton VPN. We also answer some frequently asked questions about Proton VPN and its features.

The specified template was not found. Please check your settings.

How to set up and use Proton VPN

1. Deciding on a Proton VPN subscription

Proton VPN offers three tiers: Proton Free, Proton VPN Plus and Proton Unlimited. Both VPN Plus and Unlimited are Proton’s paid VPN subscriptions and offer monthly, annual and two-year plans.

Here’s a brief overview of the three Proton tiers:

  • Proton Free: Unlimited data with slower speeds; one device connection; servers from only five countries.
  • Proton VPN Plus: 3,000+ servers in 70+ countries; 10 simultaneous device connections; fastest VPN speed.
  • Proton Unlimited: All VPN Plus features and access to Proton Mail Plus, Proton Drive Plus and Proton Calendar.

In our hands-on review, Proton VPN received a score of 4.0 stars out of 5.

Screenshot of Proton VPN Plus plans.
Figure A Proton VPN Plus plans. Image: Luis Millares

I find the one-year $5.99 per month plan for Proton VPN Plus to be the best balance of features and price. But if you’re already an avid user of Proton’s other services, getting one of the Proton Unlimited bundles is a smart choice.

Screenshot of Proton VPN Unlimited plans..
Figure B Proton VPN Unlimited plans. Image: Luis Millares

For this demonstration, I chose Proton’s free version. With its lack of a data cap, Proton Free is one of my favorite free VPNs to use long-term.

If you’re looking for other free VPNs, read our rundown on the best free VPNs in 2024.

2. Downloading and setting up Proton VPN

To download Proton Free, I clicked on the Get Proton Free button found on Proton VPN’s pricing page. From there, it asked me to create an account by providing my email address and a new password.

Screenshot of Proton account creation.
Figure C Proton account creation. Image: Luis Millares

I like that Proton gives you the option to let them generate a randomized password for you. Just make sure that you copy it to a safe place, if you opt to do so.

Screenshot of Auto-generated Proton VPN password.
Figure D Auto-generated Proton VPN password. Image: Luis Millares

From there, I was redirected to Proton VPN’s download page, which housed their different installer files for their supported operating systems.

Screenshot of Proton VPN downloads page.
Figure E Proton VPN downloads page. Image: Luis Millares

Since I’m a Windows user, I downloaded the Windows file. Proton VPN supports Windows, macOS, Linux/GNU, Chromebook, iOS, Android and others.

Once downloaded, I ran the installer file and followed the necessary steps. After going through the installation, the Proton VPN desktop app opened and asked for my account details.

Screenshot of Proton VPN initial login.
Figure F Proton VPN initial login. Image: Luis Millares

Once logged in, I was led to the main Proton VPN desktop app dashboard!

Screenshot of Proton VPN main dashboard.
Figure G Proton VPN main dashboard. Image: Luis Millares

3. Using Proton VPN

Like most VPN apps, Proton VPN has a prominent On/Off switch that automatically connects you to one of their servers. In Proton VPN’s case, it has a Quick Connect button on the left side of their app (Figure H).

Screenshot of Quick Connect button.
Figure H Quick Connect button. Image: Luis Millares

Clicking on that button will automatically connect you to the fastest server based on your location. Keep in mind that Proton Free users will only get connected to a server in the Netherlands, Romania, Japan, Poland or the United States.

In my case, clicking on Quick Connect connected me to the Proton VPN server in Japan.

Screenshot of Connected to Proton VPN Japan server.
Figure I Connected to Proton VPN Japan server. Image: Luis Millares

At this point, I am successfully connected to a secure Proton VPN server.

If you want to check if you’ve properly connected to one of Proton VPN’s servers, I recommend using a public DNS leak tool. These tools show you the current IP address and location of your device. A proper connection via a VPN should show the IP address and location of the VPN server you selected. In this case, my IP address should show that I’m in Japan.

To check, I used DNSLeakTest.com. However, there are other similar tools online that can accomplish the same function.

Screenshot of New IP address via Proton VPN.
Figure J New IP address via Proton VPN. Image: DNSleaktest.com and Luis Millares

When I checked, it showed that I had successfully connected to a VPN server located in Japan (Figure J).

Proton VPN FAQs

Is Proton VPN free?

Yes, Proton VPN has a free version that’s free forever. However, it does have limitations compared to Proton VPN’s paid plans. While it offers unlimited bandwidth, it only allows for one VPN connection, compared to 10 simultaneous device connections on the premium plans.

In addition, free users only get access to servers in five countries: the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland and the US. With the premium plans, you get access to over 3,000 servers spread across 70+ countries.

And, Proton Free has a slower VPN speed compared to both Proton VPN premium plans.

How many devices can I use Proton VPN?

Paid users of Proton VPN can have up to 10 simultaneous device connections. Meanwhile, Proton Free versions can only connect one device at a time.

How many servers and locations does Proton VPN offer?

As of March 2024, Proton VPN offers 3,428 servers in 71 countries. Keep in mind that server network numbers usually fluctuate.

However, Proton VPN has consistently had around 3,000+ servers from around 65+ countries as of late, per our research.

What operating systems does Proton VPN support?

For the desktop side, Proton VPN supports Windows, macOS, Linux and Chromebook. It also has browser extensions for both Chrome and Firefox.

For mobile, Proton VPN is available on iOS, Android and Android TV.

What if Proton VPN isn’t working properly?

If you encounter any issues with Proton VPN, you can visit their Help and support page, which has a healthy amount of support articles covering frequently asked questions and issues.

For more pressing matters, Proton VPN has a support email and a live-chat feature that’s exclusive to paid users.

What we think of Proton VPN

In our full review, Proton VPN received a rating of 4.0 stars out of 5. Its operations being based in privacy-friendly Switzerland was a highlight in our analysis, as well as it being open source.

We also liked Proton VPN’s generous free version that comes with zero bandwidth restrictions — which is uncommon compared to other free VPN options.

Surfshark VPN is an all-around VPN solution that provides a good balance of security and affordable pricing.

In this article, we walk you through how to set up and use Surfshark VPN. We also answer some frequently asked questions about Surfshark and its features.

How to set up and use Surfshark VPN

1. Choosing a Surfshark VPN subscription

Surfshark provides three subscription tiers for its VPN: Surfshark Starter, Surfshark One and Surfshark One+. Each tier offers a monthly, annual and two-year subscription. If you’re curious about the difference between the three tiers, here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Surfshark Starter – Basic VPN functionality with ad and cookie blocker.
  • Surfshark One – All Starter features with added security features like a private search engine, breach alerts and antivirus protection.
  • Surfshark One+ – All One features plus data removal from company databases and search sites.

In our hands-on review, Surfshark VPN received a score of 4.6 out of 5 stars.

Of the annual subscriptions, I find Surfshark One to be the best value. At $4.09 per month, you get the VPN and additional security features at the lowest possible cost. Of course, the plan that’s best for you will depend on you and your organization’s needs.

Fortunately, Surfshark VPN provides a 7-day free trial through its macOS, iOS and Android applications.

If you’re a Windows PC user like me, you don’t have to worry. Since Surfshark provides unlimited device access to its VPN, all you have to do is access a free trial through one of the platforms above. Once you’ve done so, you can sign in to your Windows PC like normal.

2. Downloading and setting up Surfshark

Since I’m going with the Android free trial, I downloaded the Surfshark mobile app onto my Google Pixel 6 Android smartphone.

Once downloaded, I created a Surfshark account and availed of the free trial (Figure B). You can do the same via an iPhone, iPad or macOS device or purchase a Surfshark subscription directly.

Take note that Surfshark’s free trial requires you to hand over some payment information to access. If you’re not inclined to do so, you can check out our list of the best free VPNs available in 2024.

Once I had a Surfshark account and the free trial activated, I downloaded the Surfshark desktop app for Windows from their official website.

3. Using Surfshark VPN

Like most VPN solutions, Surfshark has a prominent On/Offswitch that connects you to a secure VPN server. In Surfshark’s case, it has a Quick-connect button (see Figure F) that connects you to the fastest available server based on your location.

Simply click on the Quick-connect button or one of the server locations, and you’ll route your internet traffic through a secure connection. In this case, Surfshark’s Hong Kong server was the fastest server near me.

Once I clicked on the Quick-connect button, Surfshark showed me info about my connection to one of their VPN servers. This includes things like my new IP address, connection time and VPN protocol currently in use (Figure G).

At this point, we are now connected to the internet through a secure Surfshark VPN connection!

Surfshark VPN Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Surfshark VPN free?

No, Surfshark does not have a free plan. However, it does offer a 7-day free trial via macOS, iOS and Android.

It also has a 30-day money-back guarantee, which allows you to request a refund of your initial monthly payment if you find that their service isn’t for you.

How many devices on Surfshark VPN?

You can use an unlimited number of devices with Surfshark VPN. This means that you can connect your smartphone, computer, tablet and other devices simultaneously without worrying about paying an additional fee to protect more of your devices.

How to use Surfshark on multiple devices?

If you already have a Surfshark account and want to use the VPN on another device, simply download the Surfshark app on that device and log in with your Surfshark account.

There are no additional plans or subscriptions needed to connect multiple devices, as Surfshark supports unlimited device connections for their VPN.

How many servers does Surfshark VPN have?

As of February 2024, Surfshark VPN has 3,200+ servers spread across 100 countries. Keep in mind that server network numbers can fluctuate, so these numbers may vary as time goes on.

How do you get the best out of Surfshark?

As a VPN, Surfshark can be used in a number of ways for your business. Here are a few use-cases that can help you get the most out of Surfshark VPN:

  • Connect to a secure VPN server while connected to a public Wi-Fi network when you’re working remotely, in a cafe or co-working space.
  • Select a different IP address to hide your location and protect against unwanted trackers.
  • Encrypt your online activity while doing sensitive business work online.
  • Access geo-restricted online content needed for research purposes.
  • Avoid travel restrictions when you’re on business trips abroad.

What operating systems does Surfshark VPN support?

Surfshark supports Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems for desktop. For browsers, Chrome, Firefox and Edge also have Surfshark apps. Surfshark is also available for Android, iOS and FireTV.

What if Surfshark VPN isn’t working?

You can access Surfshark’s official Help page, which houses a variety of guides and support articles for common topics and questions.

Surfshark also offers 24/7 live chat and email support for more pressing issues you may encounter with their service.

Should you leave Surfshark VPN on all the time?

Yes, leaving Surfshark VPN on all the time is ideal. When you leave your VPN connection turned on, you minimize the risk of your online data and online activity getting exploited by hackers. This is because all your online activity is routed through an encrypted connection, making it unreadable to malicious third parties.

VPNs like Surfshark work best as “set-and-forget” applications, protecting your online privacy without hampering your day-to-day activities.

The only time I would recommend turning off your VPN connection is when you’re using an app or service that requires your actual location. This is because a VPN connection utilizes a different IP address and location than your own.

You can also turn off your Surfshark VPN connection when you experience slower internet speed. Since you’re routing your online activity through another channel, VPN speeds can decrease your overall internet speed compared to when you’re connected to your internet service provider.

What we think of Surfshark VPN

In our full review, Surfshark VPN received a score of 4.6 stars out of 5. We highlighted its affordable long-term plans and 100-country server network. We also lauded its support for an unlimited number of devices, making it a great bang-for-buck option compared to other VPNs on the market.

  • Programmable Radial Menus

Some modern mice have configurable radial menus that appear on-screen enabling rapid access to frequently used functions without using the keyboard.

Mice with gesture control enable users to perform complex commands or switch tools with simple hand movements, enhancing workflow efficiency.

  • Application-Specific Profiles for Multiple Software

Creating application-specific profiles lets the mouse automatically switch settings for CAD and visual design software.

Reduce repetitive activities by specifying specific operations, such as opening a tool or executing a set of commands.

Wireless vs. Wired

When choosing a mouse for architects, you must decide whether to go wireless or connected. Both have pros and cons, depending on your needs and preferences.

Flexible:

Wireless mice are cable-free. This lets you move freely and operate from different locations without tangled cords.

Wired mice are more reliable. They link directly to your computer, eliminating signal interference and battery difficulties with a wireless mouse.

Latency:

Architects require precision and fast response times, hence wired mice are best. They have reduced latency than wireless mice, making cursor movement smoother and more accurate.

Wireless mice use batteries or rechargeable batteries. Even while modern wireless mice have better battery life, it’s still worth considering if you spend long hours without a break. Since they receive electricity from your computer, wired mice don’t have this issue.

Portability:

Wireless mice are better for mobile workers and those who utilize many devices. It connects to devices without cords or adapters.

When batteries and recharging supplies are added, corded mice are cheaper than wireless mice.

Responsiveness

Alongside DPI, the responsiveness of the mouse is crucial. Lag or jitter can disrupt the precision needed for architectural design. Wired mice generally offer the most reliable responsiveness, but advancements in wireless technology have significantly bridged this gap.

The right combination of ergonomic design and precision makes a significant difference in an architect’s daily workflow.

A mouse that aligns with the user’s physical needs and the demands of precision-intensive tasks can elevate productivity and comfort, proving to be a valuable tool in the architect’s arsenal.

Customized Buttons

The ability to provide mouse buttons for specialized purposes is one of the most useful customizing tools. Common commands like “undo,” “redo,” “copy,” and “paste” as well as more specialist ones like switching between perspectives or using certain drawing tools can be included in this.

Having customizable buttons can help an architect stay focused on the design process by minimizing the need for keyboard shortcuts.

Understanding Ergonomic Design

Ergonomic mice come in various designs, Architects each targeting different aspects of hand and wrist comfort:

  • Traditional Ergonomic Mice: These often feature a contoured design that fits the natural curve of the hand, minimizing strain.
  • Vertical Mice: These keep the hand in a “handshake” position, promoting a more natural wrist alignment and reducing torsional stress.
  • Trackball Mice: Ideal for those with limited desk space, trackballs require minimal wrist movement, as the cursor is controlled by a stationary ball.

Tailoring to Hand Size and Grip Style

Architects should consider their hand size and grip style when choosing a mouse. A mouse that’s too large or small can cause discomfort, while the grip style (palm, claw, or fingertip) dictates the mouse shape that provides the best support.

Adjustability and Movement

A good ergonomic Architects mouse for architects should also offer adjustability in terms of weight and sensitivity, catering to different preferences and tasks. Smooth gliding over surfaces and easy access to buttons without excessive stretching are important ergonomic features.

Sensitivity

The DPI (dots per linear inch) determines how sensitive an architect’s mouse is. By adjusting DPI, you can alter the mouse’s pointer speed for precision tasks. The higher the units of the DPI your mouse contains. The more sensitive it is the faster it will work.

If you are looking for the best mouse for Architects, you should look at a mouse with high DPI sensitivity or a mouse with the ability to adjust DPI.

Portability

Portability is more often connected to those who travel a lot and use their laptop for Architects on the go. For such Architects, the small and compact shape of the mouse often acts as a convenient portable travel companion. A travel-friendly architect mouse should comfortably fit inside your laptop bag without damaging it during transport.

Such Architects should seek sturdy yet lightweight mice as they are handy and do not add any extra weight burden. In this scenario, wireless mice gain an extra advantage over wired ones.

Comfort

For Architects, comfort should be the top priority when buying a mouse. Most of the comfort goes to the design and shape of the mouse and how it fits in one’s hand. Architect mouse that rests comfortably on your hands without wrist pain can make tasks easier and faster to complete.

What Is Passwordless Authentication?

What Is Passwordless Authentication?

Passwordless authentication is a more secure method of granting access to systems. Typically, it works by verifying something unique to a user or something physical that the individual must possess.

In this article, we explore the types of passwordless authentication, benefits and limitations, and popular solutions.

Benefits of passwordless authentication Drawbacks of passwordless authentication
More secure than password-based systems. May require more upfront training.
Smoother user experience (UX). Higher short-term implementation costs.
Reduced need to reset user logins. More difficult to resolve login issues.

Passwordless authentication allows users to access a system without the need to provide a password. Instead, users are authenticated based on other factors, such as biometrics, magic links, hardware tokens, and more.

Businesses can reap many benefits from this. It’s a more secure way of authenticating users, making companies less susceptible to data breaches. Information technology (IT) departments can also spend less time supporting users with resetting passwords, and individual users can have a better experience gaining access to systems.

Types of passwordless authentication methods

With passwordless authentication, users typically can be verified with something that is either unique to them or something physical that only they would have. Below are several examples of how passwordless authentication can be implemented to improve both local and cloud security.

  • Magic links: This is often a one-time use link that is sent to a user’s authenticated email or phone. Clicking the link will subsequently give the user access to the application.
  • Biometrics: This works by verifying something unique to the user. Common examples include fingerprints, voiceprints, and facial scans.
  • Hardware tokens: This can include USB devices, such as FIDO security keys, phones, smart cards, and near-field communication (NFC) devices.
  • One-time passwords (OTP): OTP’s are codes that can be sent to a user’s verified email or phone and typically are only valid for a short period of time.
  • Push notifications: Users logged in to an account or system on a separate device can receive a notification to authorize a new login.

Passwordless authentication benefits vs. passwordless authentication drawbacks

Although more secure, passwordless authentication comes at the cost of more difficult reset processes should users get locked out. Despite that, it’s becoming increasingly popular with as many as 41% of companies planning to adopt or continue using passwordless authentication over the next one to three years.

Benefits of passwordless authentication

  • More secure than password-based systems: Since something unique to the user’s identity or a physical token is required, it’s more secure than password-based systems. Passwords, by comparison, are more susceptible to things like phishing, keylogging, and brute force attacks.
  • Smoother UX: Eliminating the need to remember passwords makes it easier and faster for users to get access to systems. It can also be used in conjunction with single sign-on (SSO) so that a single set of credentials can be used to access multiple services.
  • Reduced need to reset user logins: Many passwordless authentication methods, such as those that use biometrics and hardware tokens, don’t require the user to remember anything. As a result, it can significantly reduce the need to reset an account due to a forgotten password.

Drawbacks of passwordless authentication

Although it has many benefits, businesses should also examine the downsides of switching to passwordless authentication systems. Companies should consider the lifecycle of such a switch, such as the initial implementation to any ongoing items required to maintain the system.

  • May require more upfront training: Users may be less familiar with a passwordless system, something that may require more initial training time and support for it to be used seamlessly.
  • Higher short-term implementation costs: Businesses may incur higher short-term hardware and software costs to implement a new system.
  • More difficult to resolve login issues: The task of resetting a password is simple for a company’s IT department. Meanwhile, Passwordless systems can be more challenging and costly if a user gets locked out of their account as it could require replacement hardware tokens or an alternate method to regain account access.

Factors impacting passwordless authentication security

Businesses can reap many benefits from a passwordless authentication system. While the adoption rate continues to grow over time, some businesses may struggle with its implementation for the following reasons.

  • Costs to obtain the new system: Although companies can save money over the long term, the initial upfront cost may impact a company’s cash flow negatively.
  • Time needed to switch: Switching systems can disrupt existing workflows and companies may be hesitant to make changes that may interrupt daily business activities.
  • Training resources required: Depending on the complexity, training may be required for the IT team and other employees to use and troubleshoot the new system properly.

Popular passwordless authentication solutions

There are many providers of passwordless authentication solutions, and the best one for a business will depend on its unique circumstances. Some solutions like ManageEngine’s ADSelfServicePlus product can provide one-click access to a wide range of applications while others, such as OneLogin, can evaluate the context and risk of each login before granting access.

Prove Auth

Used by large companies worldwide, Prove Auth provides passwordless and OTP-less authentication for mobile, web, and omnichannel experiences by using app push notifications and biometrics. Businesses must speak with the sales team to get pricing information.

Thales SafeNet Trusted Access

Businesses can combine multi-factor authentication (MFA) and SSO capabilities while easily managing user access to a wide range of platforms. Adaptive, push, and pattern-based authentication can be done, and pricing is customized based on each individual company.

ManageEngine ADSelfServicePlus

This allows businesses to simplify logins by enabling SSO one-click access to cloud and on-premises applications. Pricing is free for small companies with up to 50 users, and larger businesses can request a custom quote.

OneLogin

Ideal for startups to medium-sized companies, OneLogin can evaluate the details of logins, such as device type, time of day, and location. It also offers other features, such as SSO and MFA. Bundled pricing begins at $4 per user each month, depending on what features are selected.

Factors that influence passwordless authentication solution pricing

Pricing for a passwordless authentication solution typically is driven by specific features and functionality provided. Other factors that can impact pricing include the number of users, subscription method and length, and whether the product has any physical hardware requirements.

Should your organization use a passwordless authentication solution?

Passwordless authentication provides businesses with a more secure way of ensuring authorized access to systems. While there may be short-term expenses associated with making the switch, this can prevent the costs that could be incurred as the result of a data breach, each of which is estimated to cost $4 million on average.

Sophos Guidance on CIRCIA

Sophos Guidance on CIRCIA

Note: this information is relevant to US based organizations; click the image above to download the report.

In March 2022, President Biden signed the Cyber Incident Reporting for Critical Infrastructure Act of 2022 (CIRCIA) into law in the United States. Its enactment requires the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to develop and implement regulations requiring covered entities to report covered cyber incidents and ransomware payments to CISA, within 24 months of passing the law. The new law grants CISA with its first-ever enforcement powers.

CISA is expected to deliver a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in early 2024 that will highlight the proposed reporting requirements, which are expected to be available for feedback before final publication in 2025. For updated guidance and feedback opportunities, organizations can visit https://www.cisa.gov/CIRCIA.

Who will be affected by this legislation?

The legislation implements regulations on United States “Covered Entities” in the critical infrastructure sector, as defined by Presidential Policy Directive 211. Covered entities are organizations within industry sectors considered to be “critical infrastructure,” listed in the table below. The sectors and their Sector Specific Agencies (SSAs) include, but are not limited to:

It is worth noting that Education is considered a subsector of the Government Facilities Sector,2 and the Education Facilities Subsector encompasses prekindergarten through 12th grade, as well as post-secondary public, private, and proprietary education facilities.

What are the requirements of the legislation?

Reporting is not required until CISA’s Final Rule implementing CIRCIA’s reporting requirements goes into effect, which is expected in 2025. Until then, organizations are strongly encouraged to voluntarily share cyber incident information with CISA, and they can be reached 24/7 at [email protected], or (888) 282-08703, or their online portal at https://www.cisa.gov/report. More information regarding the final legislation and voluntary reporting can be found here4.

However, once the Final Rule goes into effect, it will likely require “Covered Entities” to:

  • Report a covered cyber incident within 72 hours
  • Report a ransomware payment within 24 hours of making the transaction
  • Submit updates on a previously submitted report if new information becomes available, or a ransomware payment was made after submitting a report
  • Preserve data relevant to the incident or ransom payment according to procedures to be outlined in the final legislation

If a “Covered Entity” is a victim of a cyber incident and makes a ransomware payment prior to the 72-hour reporting requirement, they may likely be allowed to submit one single report, however, final reporting procedures are still to be determined.

What constitutes a covered cyber incident?

The final definition is yet to be proposed; however it will likely include at a minimum:

  • Substantial loss of confidentiality, integrity, or availability of such information system or network, or a serious impact on the safety and resiliency of operational systems and processes
  • Disruption of business or industrial operations, including due to a denial-of-service attack, ransomware attack, or exploitation of a zero-day vulnerability, against:
    • an information system or network
    • an operational technology system or process
  • Unauthorized access or disruption of business or industrial operations due to loss of service facilitated through, or caused by, a compromise of a cloud service provider, managed service provider, or other third-party data hosting provider or by a supply chain compromise

The final legislation will also likely account for the sophistication or novelty of tactics used to perpetrate a cyber incident, as well as:

  • The type, volume, and sensitivity of the data at issue
  • The number of individuals directly or indirectly affected or potentially affected by such a cyber incident
  • Potential impacts on industrial control systems, such as supervisory control and data acquisition systems, distributed control systems, and programmable logic controllers

What must the contents of a report include?

The final required reporting content may vary, and will be available after publication, but as a best practice in incident response management, Covered Entities should be prepared to report:

  1. Incident date and time
  2. Incident location
  3. Type of observed activity
  4. Detailed narrative of the event
  5. Number of people or systems affected
  6. Company/Organization name
  7. Point of Contact details
  8. Severity of event
  9. Critical Infrastructure Sector if known
  10. Anyone else that was informed

Other information that may be required could include:

  • The impact to the operations of the covered entity
  • A description of exploited vulnerabilities where applicable and actor TTPs (tactics, techniques, and procedures) used to perpetrate the cyber incident
  • Categories of information believed to have been accessed
  • Any identifying information or contact information related to the attacker if available, ie in the case of a ransomware event
  • Contact information for an entity that may have made a ransom payment on behalf of the affected organization
  • The ransom instructions, demand, and type of currency used

Which third parties can report on the affected party’s behalf?

Entities deemed critical infrastructure that are required to report a cyber incident or ransom payment may be allowed to use a third party to submit the report on their behalf. The final guidance on how to use a third party will be available with the final regulations, but it is expected that the list of third parties will likely include:

  • Incident response companies
  • Insurance providers
  • Service providers
  • Information Sharing and Analysis Organizations (ISAOs)
  • Law firms

What happens if an affected entity fails to comply with reporting requirements?

If an impacted organization misses the 72-hour deadline, a subpoena may be issued by the Director of CISA to compel disclosure of information deemed necessary. The final regulations will fully define enforcement methods and what can be expected.

What protections do reporting parties have?

CIRCIA reports are expected to be considered the commercial, financial, and proprietary information of the covered entity and are likely exempt from disclosure under section 552(b)(3) of title 5, United States Code (commonly known as the ‘Freedom of Information Act’), as well as any provision of State, Tribal, or local freedom of information law, open government law, open meetings law, open records law, sunshine law, or similar law requiring disclosure of information or records. Such an exemption is likely to require the reporting entity to assert its rights in writing under this section.
